Privacy Policy for Torick's Language Trainer apps

Introduction

Torick Enterprises ("we," "our," or "us") publishes the following language-learning apps: "Torick's Italian Trainer", "Torick's Spanish Trainer", "Torick's French Trainer", "Torick's German Trainer", "Torick's Portuguese Trainer" and "Torick's Dutch Trainer" (each, the "App"). They work in the same way, and this Privacy Policy applies to all of them. It explains how we handle information when you use our App. In this policy, "the language" means the language the App teaches (Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese or Dutch).

How the App Works

The App is an educational tool for learning the verb conjugations, vocabulary, cognates, phrases and pronunciation of the language. The App:

• Works offline for all of its learning features
• Contains pre-loaded verb, vocabulary, cognate and phrase data and pronunciation audio for the language
• Offers an optional offline translator between English and the language, which needs a one-time download of a language model for each direction (see below)
• Offers an optional one-time purchase ("Pro") that unlocks more verbs, tenses and cognates and longer translations
• Does not require registration or login

Offline Translation and Model Downloads

Translation happens entirely on your device. The text you type is never sent anywhere.

Before the translator can be used, you choose to download its language model (about 135 to 175 MB per direction, depending on the language; about 350 MB for English to Portuguese). The App then downloads the model files from Hugging Face (huggingface.co, operated by Hugging Face, Inc.) and its content delivery network. As with any download, these services receive your device's IP address and standard technical information about the request (such as the time and the file requested). The App sends no personal information with the download, and we do not receive any information about it. Hugging Face's handling of this information is described in its privacy policy.

This is the only time the App itself connects to the internet. The downloaded models are stored on your device and can be deleted from the Translate screen at any time.

Purchases

The Pro upgrade is sold through Google Play (on Android) or the Apple App Store (on iOS). The store handles the payment, and your payment details are processed by Google or Apple under their own privacy policies (Google Privacy Policy, Apple Privacy Policy). The App only asks the store whether Pro has been purchased on your account, so that it can unlock Pro and restore it after a reinstall or on another device. We do not receive your name, email address or payment details.

Text-to-Speech

Recorded audio is included for the most common verbs, vocabulary and phrases. For other words, the App uses your device's built-in text-to-speech voice. The App passes only the word or phrase to be spoken to that system service; how it works is determined by your device and its text-to-speech provider.

Permissions Used

The App requests the following permissions:

• Internet: To download the translation models when you choose to, and for the store to process purchases
• Billing (Google Play): To offer the Pro purchase through Google Play
• Audio Settings: To play pronunciation audio
• Wake Lock: Prevents the device from sleeping while audio is playing

Data Stored on Your Device

The following is stored only on your device and is never sent to us:

• Learning data and pronunciation audio for the language (pre-loaded)
• Your settings, such as the App language
• Verbs you mark as favourites
• Whether Pro has been purchased
• Downloaded translation models, if you choose to download them

Uninstalling the App removes all of this. Your Pro purchase stays on your store account and can be restored.

Third-Party Services

The App contains no advertising, analytics or tracking. The only third-party services involved are Google Play or the Apple App Store for purchases and Hugging Face for model downloads, as described above. The translation engine (ONNX Runtime) is used with its telemetry switched off.

Children's Privacy

Our App is suitable for users of all ages, including children. We do not collect any personal information from users of any age. Purchases are made through the app store and are subject to its parental controls.

Credits and Attribution

Audio Generation: The pronunciation audio files were generated using Google Text-to-Speech (gTTS) during the app development process. These audio files are included in the app for educational purposes.

Translation: The translation models are OPUS-MT by the Language Technology Research Group, University of Helsinki, released under the Apache License 2.0. Full licence details for all open-source software in the App are under Settings → Open-source licences.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy in the App and updating the "Last updated" date.

Compliance

This Privacy Policy complies with:

• Google Play Store requirements
• General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
• Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)
• California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA)

This Privacy Policy is effective as of the date listed above and will remain in effect except with respect to any changes in its provisions in the future, which will be in effect immediately after being posted in the App.
